Lort Smith Animal Hospital – North Melbourne, AUS

With a staff of 60+ veterinarians, Lort Smith is Australia’s largest non-profit veterinary service provider and a longstanding, revered institution that cares for thousands of pets each year. Areas of practice include veterinary emergency, specialty, and referrals from other hospitals for surgery, diagnostics, dentistry, dermatology, cardiology, and many other disciplines. In addition, Lort Smith performs veterinary medicine for the world-renowned Melbourne Zoo and runs educational programs for the university at Melbourne Polytechnic. The redevelopment of its existing hospital, performed by rfa in partnership with local architect CHC, thus delivers expanded facilities equipped with innovative technology to fully support high quality animal care. All work on this dense urban lot was carefully planned and phased to maintain critical care operations throughout construction. The resulting facility is comprised of 34,400 SF (3,200 SM) across four stories, incorporating basement parking as well as a rooftop exercise yard. The floor plan prioritizes low stress design for the animals in Lort Smith’s care by separating specifically-tailored dog, cat, and exotic waiting, exam, and treatment areas. At the hospital’s exterior, an innovative screened façade serves a dual purpose: as a striking graphic backdrop for signage and to conceal nearly 2,000 SF (170 SM) of future expansion space.
