Lort Smith – Campbellfield, AUS

During the redevelopment of Lort Smith’s flagship hospital in North Melbourne, Australia, rfa and local architect CHC were asked to design a new animal adoption center and companion animal clinic to be located approximately 15 miles (25 km) away in Campbellfield. This development was strategically important to the organization and its patrons in order to:

  1. provide more convenient general clinical services to surrounding communities as the initial location in a hub-and-spoke expansion plan
  2. relocate adoption services out of the city to a spacious lot with room for animals to roam
  3. facilitate expansion and consolidation of specialized medical services at the North Melbourne hospital
  4. temporarily reduce the caseload at North Melbourne during its construction

Lort Smith’s Campbellfield facility encompasses 15,100 SF (1,400 SM) and serves approximately 600 dogs, cats, and pocket pets per year. Also sited is a 985 SF (~90 SM) dog park. In addition to community-based animal shelter and welfare programs such as spay/neuter services and canine training, this facility also supports the organization’s many volunteers.
